Tutorial for #tweedybookguy IRC Chatroom on Blitzed

What is this guide for

This guide is to help those who would like to join in the chat, particularly those who are new to IRC. Please feel free to print this page if you wish.

What is #tweedybookguy

#tweedybookguy is a chatroom on the IRC Blitzed network and is associated with the Tweedy Book Guy website and the tweedybookguy Yahoo Group. You do not have to be a member of the Yahoo Group to join us in #tweedybookguy.

This a chatroom for those of us who like to discuss anything about the work of Anthony Stewart Head - his acting, singing and endearing nature. OK. Let's be totally honest - we discuss anything here. This an environment where we can just chat away and get to know people, have a laugh and get answers to the great questions that burden us as well as many more that don't. We giggle a lot in our friendly little channel.

What are the Rules for #tweedybookguy

The rules for the #tweedybookguy are simple; be nice and be aware of possible spoiler talk. Some countries air Buffy over a year later than in the US. Manchild and Spooks hasn't aired at all in many countries and some people are new to the fandom and haven't managed to catch all the episodes yet. Spoiler chat isn't banned, just ask in the channel first so people can cover their eyes if they don't want to be spoiled.

What is IRC

Internet Relay Chat is a live chat protocol. It lets us meet together and type away to each other. To meet up on IRC you will need an IRC program. There are many available and we will guide you through the basic use of a few different ones. You will find that many of us use mIRC so that may a good program to start with.

When you get adventurous you can even use IRC to download files, but that is a whole other story …

Getting software

There are a number of programs available for accessing IRC. We will cover just a few here to get things going.

mIRC is a well used IRC program. It is shareware, which means you can use it for free for an initial period. A nice aspect about mIRC is that is doesn’t stop working after the trial period is up. It will occasionally bring up a website that encourages you to register.

You can download and learn more here.

Setting it up - our guides

How to get setup and connected using:

mIRC

Once you have set up your software, return here for instructions on what to do next.

Registering your nick on Blitzed

It is best register your IRC nickname for use on Blitzed. Nicknames will automatically expire after 30 days of absence.

To register the nickname SexyGiles with the password of dearlord at the email address of sexygiles@yahoo.com.uk type the following command into your server window after you have connected using the nickname SexyGiles.

The format is:
/msg NickServ REGISTER <Password> <Email>

For our example we type in:
/msg NickServ REGISTER dearlord sexygiles@yahoo.com.uk

HINT: It best to not use a real 'ditionary word' as your password.

After you have a registered nickname you should identify yourself each time you connect by typing:

The format:
/msg NickServ Identify <Password>

Our example:
/msg NickServ Identify dearlord

Who will I meet in #tweedybookguy

We are not a busy channel so it is not an overwhelming place to be. Things are busiest on the weekends and fluctuate over time zones. It is possible that when you first join, there may be no one in channel or there may be someone but they don't respond. DONT PANIC. You are not being ignored. It is just that some of us stay connected while we do other things like feed the kids or do the housework or answer the phone or even something as bizare as work! Just type in a greeting and wait, or go away and come back a little while later. It is OK to leave the connection open - many of us do. If we go away for a while we may change our nics to show that we are connected but not sitting at the computer. For example, my nic may change from @Numbat3 to @NumbatsGhost or @Numbat-away. (The @ sign means that person is a channel operator - a person of the good ;-)
